Bible Character Party

On 10/29/10 the Fifth Grade class had their Bible Character Party. Each participant dressed up as their hero in the Bible. Also, the Fifth Grade class had to answer a couple questions on a index card. Thanks to whoever helped us with the costumes and for those people who helped with snacks. The party was awesome!!!

Some people dressed up as Bible characters some people didn't recognize. A few girls even dressed up like Queen Esther! Students dressed up as Noah, an Angel, Joseph, Caleb, a shepherd, and plenty others! Thanks again for all participants!

Not only the Bible Character Party was today but the Fifth Grade class also had the REWARD RAFFLE! Everyone got at least 3 prizes. But some people even got 4 prizes! Some of the rewards were Krazy Straw cups, stickers, 5th grade photo albums, Ty Silly Bandz, a Wal-Mart gift card, lunch tickets and much, much more! Thanks, Mrs. Mellette for all the prizes! And parents, just so you know, the fifth grade class gets raffle tickets for good behavior. So make sure your child has good behavior!!

Reminder About the Upcoming Character Day

My precious fifth graders are fretting about the upcoming
Character Day on Friday....
"Mrs. Mellette, I don't know if I can dress up...it's too hard!"
(Excuse the exaggeration of the crying child above - I just stuck it in there for fun!)

Let me put you all to rest.

To put together a costume for a Biblical character, use whatever materials you have at home. Please don't feel like you need to go out and buy something for Character Day. Many of the costumes can be made simply out of old bedsheets or robes. You can even hold things together using an old tie or piece of rope. Have fun with it!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Working Hard on the Computer

Today is Friday and my delightful 5th grade students are busy typing their Tall Tales stories on the computer. We're working in the computer lab. I have a grand view of them all as I'm sitting in the very back row. From here I observe all of their monitors. Some students have two paragraphs typed, others have only their title typed. All are working at their own pace and all of them are working diligently to get their stories typed. It's a joy to see them working with such care and concern. I sure do love this class!

Raffle Award Time

I'm excited about the Reward Raffle next Friday. If you want to know more about the reward I will tell you more about it. We have been collecting raffle tickets. We put them into a jar or something and someone's name is picked. The person's name that is picked gets the prize. I'm excited for next Friday.

Upcoming Character Day

Friday, October 29th is a half day and we are celebrating the end of the marking period with Character Day!

Fifth Grade students may dress up as a character from the Bible. For example, a child may wear a coat made of camel hair, have a pocketful of fake locusts and wear a fake, hairy beard if they want to dress as John the Baptist. A girl may want to dress in her very best to portray Queen Esther. It's up to you! The only thing I don't want to see is NON-Biblical characters and masks.

During Character Day, I would like each student to share: the name of the person he/she dressed up as, who/what that person did, and why they chose that Biblical character. Your child can write that information down on an index card.

If you have any questions, please email me at wmellette@lccs.cc.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to Friday, October 29th for a number of reasons: it's Character Day, our first Reward Raffle and it's a half day of school! Wahoo! Should be fun!

This Week of 5th Grade at LCCS

This week in Social Studies in our fifth grade class at LCCS, we made cars out of candy. We had to make as many cars as how many people were in are group. Also in the groups, we had to make the candy cars all identical.

In Science, for the last month or so, we have been growing plants in a bag and in a pot. We are having a lot of fun with all these projects. For the plant project, the plants in the pots grew so much better then the ones in the bag. Only Miss Ashley's plant in the plastic baggie made some root action.

In Language Arts, we are going to be writing a Tall Tale. We watched clips of Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and John Henry and more.

A True Blessing

Last Wednesday we were BLESSED by Mrs. Lois Early! She shared the most DEAR story about a girl who was born with a pituitary gland problem that caused her to grow at an alarming rate. The doctors thought the girl was going to be a giant, but finally at the age of 12, the meds kicked in and the girl stopped growing. The girl faced terrible ridicule from her peers who accused her of failing many grades - saying that was why she was so tall.

When the young lady was 15, her father and her came home from school to find her mom dead! She hadn't even been ill! What a difficult period in her life. But, God brought the girl some Christian friends and finally she realized that she needed forgiveness - needed a Savior, so the girl came to know Jesus personally!

That girl Mrs. Early spoke of was HERSELF! The students were so MOVED by her story that it opened the door for them to share different struggles they have or are going through. It was a wonderful time - a story of God's faithfulness - that we'll always cherish!

Field Trip to Zook Molasses and Good Food, Inc.

On Tuesday, we went on a field trip to Zook Molasses and Good Food. When we first got there, we looked at some pictures of the tornado and the destruction that hit their company in November of 1999. Mrs. Mellette's brother-in-law, Ron Glessner, told us about the tornado and showed us were all the molasses is stored.

After that, he showed us upstairs where all the food is packaged. He showed us a new assembly line that makes caramel but it wasn't running that day. He showed us some other assembly lines, too. One man had something like a suction cup that could pick up a package and put it with the other packages on a skid.

They use the assembly line because they make more product with less people so they don't have to pay as many salaries. After showing us around, we tried molasses and blackstrap molasses. We also tried sorghum, then we had lunch. Lunch was pizza, Auntie Ann soft pretzels, apples with the caramel they make there, and Herrs potato chips. For drinks, we could have either Sprite, water, or my favorite - Root Beer. Some kids got some snacks and drinks from the vending machine. After we ate lunch, we went to the shop and got candy, pancake mix, and lots of other stuff. Mrs. Mellette's parents and sisters then provided a goodie bag for all of us. The goodie bag was filled with candy, a flashlight, a molasses cookie, a pad of paper and a pencil.

When we got back from our field trip, we had to fill out a paper about Zook Molasses and Good food. Zook Molasses started in 1934. Good Food,Inc started in 1980. Zook Molasses makes products for animals and Good Food products for people. Zook Molasses and Good Food makes products for many different companies. They get oil that has been squeezed out of soybeans. They take the oil and then they mix it and make it into olive oil and other oils that you eat. You can't make it into car oil but it still is useful.

Maddie's goodbye

This is about Maddie and her trip to Wisconsin. This week was Maddie's last week here at LCCS. We had a surprise for her on Thursday, but we couldn't tell her about it. We signed a pillow case that said 'We'll miss moo!" and we did a book which was called 'Oh the places you'll go" by Dr. Seuss. We also had a card for her, and Charles's mom made cupcakes. We did fun activities for Maddie's last day too. We are really going to miss her. By: Eliana
