This past week in fifth grade we learned about Canada and we had some food from Canada called poutine. Poutine is like french fries but with gravy and cheese curds. It is soooo good -it sounds really dusgusting, but it is amazingly good!

Last week we finished our read aloud book "Holes" so this week we had a book report on it. You could choose what you wanted to do: a one-person show or a diorama. We had a great time showing everybody our stuff or performing our one-person show/skit. I really liked Seirra Stoltzfus' one-person show. She was Kissin' Kate Barlow. Kate Barlow was a teacher. She loved a man named Sam. Sam was black and Kate was white and that wasn't allowed in that time period. The sheriff said, "If you give me a kiss, I will let you have Sam as your boyfriend and I won't kill him. But Kate did not give him a kiss, so he shot Sam. Then, she was known as Kissin' Kate Barlow because she would go around places and if guys asked for a kiss, she'd kill them. Then, she would put on her bright red lipstick and give them the kiss they wanted and that's what she did to the sheriff. That's the scene Seirra acted out.

There are a lot of other great skits and dioramas, too, so check out fifthgradefunatlccs.blogspot.com. We're having a great week with our great teacher MRS.MELLETTE!!!!!!!!!! :) From Kaylee Glessner

What Does an Apple have in Common with God?

We've had a lot of great discussions in 5th grade during Bible class. While studying a very hairy desert man....

..Students asked about the TRINITY.

The Trinity - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit - can be a very difficult subject to teach. So, we read this book...

It really seemed to help. Here's what the book talked about:

Just as the apple consists of three parts:

the skin
the flesh
the seeds

...it is still one apple.

God had three persons:

Father,
Son
Holy Spirit

...but He is one God.

Holes Book Report: October 24

We're finishing up Louis Sachar's "Holes" book. As a concluding assignment, students need to do a book report. They can choose to do a
One-Man Show,
a T-Chart
(Here's an example of a T-Chart)

or a Shoebox-Diorama. The Book Report is due Monday, October 24.

Today students received a paper on the type of book report they would like to do. Here is a link for a Shoebox Diorama.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Our First Field Trip

This week has been very interesting. We went to Zook Molasses and Good Food in Honey Brook for a field trip. It was a lot of fun. We walked around the factory, we got to see different kinds of machines, and we had to wear hairnets. I thought that it was very fun. We got to smell all different kinds of smells: Like, molasses, maple syrup, vanilla, and soup spices. We got to buy some stuff from the store. Another part of the field trip was going to September Farms, where we got to sample cheese. We also got to see them make cheese. Lastly, we went to L & S Sweeteners. There we got to go into a train caboose, and see how the people there turned it into offices and conference rooms. We went into the Good Food Outlet Store and got to try molasses - it was really good. I think that this week was extremely fun.
